Doble Knowledge on Partial Discharge (PD)

What is Partial Discharge (PD) and why should you care about it?

Partial Discharges (PD) are evidence of a degrading insulation capacity, which will lead to cost-intensive repairs and can predicatively lead to an electrical breakdown of the HV apparatus.
Partial Discharges are mainly caused by natural circumstances or by accelerated aging of the HV insulation. But also manufacturing or installation failures can lead to harmful partial discharges. The goal of partial discharge measurements is to detect the partial discharges in an early stage and to evaluate them in a proper way.

During the past 30 years, great strides were made in online monitoring of rotating machines, transformers and HV apparatus. Partial discharge (PD) monitoring offers an excellent method of assessing the condition of various HV components under actual in-service stress such as load and temperature. With these advances and a greater understanding of the mechanism of PD, a more informed decision can be made about the condition of the associated insulation systems.
