100 Years of Doble: Celebrating a Century of Innovation
“One of the most remarkable qualities about Doble Engineering is the way it has managed change while preserving continuity. This it has done by building on the insights and accomplishments of preceding generations, not casting them aside.” – (Doble Tested, 1995, p. 193).
This was written back in 1995 in commemoration of Doble’s 75th anniversary. As we celebrate a century of keeping the lights on, the statement holds as true today as it did back then.
Think back 25 years ago…
Although many in the industry have had concerns over the idea of digitization due to fear over the technical challenge of maintaining proficiency and process change, Doble embraced it.
That’s because Doble revolved itself around data centricity well before it became an industry standard. Sure, Doble may not have labeled itself as a software company back in the early ‘90s, but the Doble Database™ has existed and has been easily accessible from the very beginning.
Little did the company know that it was way ahead of the industry. Several achievements contributed to Doble’s pioneer status in digital innovation, including:
- The development of the first digital relay test set
- Inventing a rugged laptop to collect field test data – a revolutionary two-in-one offering, as field test data collection and laptops were yet to be adopted by the power industry.
- Offering customers remote cloud data storage, well before anyone even knew the ‘cloud’ existed
- Crowd-sourcing test results to develop the first cloud-based analytics engine for electrical test results back in the 90s
So, this new era simply required taking those methodologies and incorporating technology to make processes more efficient.
With over 80 years of historical data from more than 5,500 customers across 110 countries, the Doble Knowledgebase is the core of everything we do—and there’s nothing quite like it in the industry.
History repeats itself…
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from playing a leading role in the power industry’s digitization, it’s that success doesn’t come from sticking to the same playbook. The past decade has arguably created more change than the prior 50 years combined. Cybersecurity, interconnectivity and renewables are just a few of today’s new challenges rocking the industry and the company is at the front of the lines for innovation while empowering customers to do the same.
Doble has been accounted for to transform the industry before and we don’t take that lightly. We are just as excited as we are prepared to do it again —all while maintaining reliable, safe and secure energy.
