Why Doble
![]()
The Doble Materials Laboratory has been testing insulating liquids since 1933.
The Doble Materials Laboratory was established in 1933 and is staffed by experienced chemists, backed by engineers who understand the asset, not just chemistry. This pairing is why a Doble report never stops at a column of numbers. Every report includes an analysis of the data and clear recommendations for action when it is warranted.
Plenty of labs can run the tests. A few things, though, only Doble can offer:
|
ONLY AT DOBLE · 01 World’s Only Commercial Oil StandardsTrue North (gas-in-oil) and Atlantis (water-in-oil), ISO 17034 accredited reference materials. Even competing labs calibrate their equipment to them. |
ONLY AT DOBLE · 02 The Annual TOPS Survey, since 1953The Doble Annual TOPS Survey has measured the world’s commercial transformer oils every year for seven decades. |
ONLY AT DOBLE · 03 Client Insulating Materials CommitteeAn industry forum where the people solve shared reliability problems together. |
Doble chemists also participate in the standards committees Doble tests to, including long-running leadership on ASTM Committee D-27, so the methods behind your results reflect the current state of the practice.
What We Measure
![]()
Over 200 tests on liquid and solid insulation.
Dissolved gas analysis is the single most important test on transformer oil. Doble measures the nine key fault gases plus water, then surrounds them with the full diagnostic panel.
Oil Quality screens: the routine health panel for in-service liquidFault, Wear & Contamination Metals: metals-in-oil pointing to specific failure modesMethanol & Ethanol: emerging early markers of cellulose agingPolychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs): identification and quantification for safe handling |
Water-in-oil: water content and its effect on insulation lifeFuranic Compounds: paper-degradation byproducts in the oilDegree of Polymerization: direct measure of remaining paper insulation lifeTesting of Solid Dielectrics: solid insulation evaluation, including aged conditions |
Metals narrow down the sourceA rise in wear or contamination metals is an early signal, but the value is in the detail. The specific metals present can help point to which part of the asset is shedding them, so you know where to look before the next outage. |
PCBs, handled correctlyPCB identification and quantification is part of Doble’s accredited scope. International samples are tested at our Montreal lab, since US rules restrict importing in-service oil with PCBs. |
New-oil and spec testingFull purchase-specification testing to the Doble TOPS guideline or ASTM D3487, plus tailored package screens for in-service liquids. |

What Others Calibrate To
![]()
True North and Atlantis are the only commercial gas-in-oil and water-in-oil reference standards made anywhere.
True North & AtlantisUsed as benchmarks, True North (gas-in-oil) and Atlantis (water-in-oil) are the only way to calibrate a complete laboratory test process end to end. Doble | Morgan Schaffer is ISO 17034:2016 accredited by ANAB to produce these reference materials, which also power the portable Myrkos 2 Analyzer and Myrkos 2 Lab Package. |
Annual TOPS Survey: The Purchase SpecificationThe Doble Transformer Oil Purchase Specification defines what new mineral oil should meet, from naphthenic base crudes through additive disclosure to production and shipping controls. It is the yardstick behind the Annual TOPS Survey, and a practical reference whenever you are buying or qualifying new oil. |
Samples to Results
![]()
Free access to your samples and results, in real time.
The portal gives you direct access to Doble’s laboratory information management system (LIMS). It links the entire oil-analysis process and keeps asset managers and lab staff working from the same view.
Send a sample, ask about a test, or check on results already in the lab. Call 1 888.443.6253, email [email protected], or use the button below.
Connected Intelligence
![]()
One comprehensive health picture per asset, from every source.
InsideView centralizes oil-filled asset management across the laboratory, portable analyzers, and online DGA monitors, so every team works from the same diagnosis.
Dissolved gas, water, furans, metals. On their own they are just numbers. Doble’s chemists read them together to reveal what is happening inside your asset, long before it shows up in the field.
Learn From the Source
![]()
Learn to read oil and paper data the way Doble’s chemists do.
The same chemists and engineers who run the lab also teach what they know. This interactive seminar pairs the theory with real case studies, so engineers, chemists, and anyone who reviews oil and paper data can read results with confidence and catch trouble in transformers, load tap changers, and circuit breakers before it becomes a failure.

Cooperative Diagnostics
![]()
Targeted diagnostic packages for the equipment that fails quietly.
Two cooperative programs built around Doble’s diagnostic test package, designed to optimize maintenance and help you prioritize where to spend limited funds. Both detect developing problems without an outage, and both run on the same lab science as everything else here.
LTCare ProgramLoad tap changers fail mechanically, electrically, from wear, and from local fouling and overheating. LTCare flags failing tap changers before they fail and keeps you from spending on the healthy ones.
Tests: dissolved gas, particle count, microscopic particle exam, Doble Carbon Code, oil quality, metals-in-oil (LTCare+) |
Breaker Analysis Program (DBA)Bulk oil circuit breakers fail the same quiet ways. DBA finds developing problems early and points maintenance to where the evidence says it is actually needed.
Tests: dissolved gas, particle count, microscopic particle exam, oil quality, metals-in-oil (DBA+) |
Both programs are a cooperative effort: in exchange for the low package cost, participants share findings from field inspections and investigations.
THE DIFFERENTIATOR
![]()
Most labs test the sample you send and stop there. Doble built the entire chain instead, from the accredited bench to the field to permanent online monitors, all on the same DGA science and anchored by Doble’s gas-in-oil standards.
01 / LAB Spot-check at the benchThe ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab is the benchmark, running the full panel of more than 200 tests. Its gas-in-oil standards are the world’s only commercial ones, and even competing labs calibrate to them. |
› |
02 / FIELD Myrkos goes portableMyrkos brings laboratory-quality DGA into the field, reading all nine fault gases on the same gas chromatography the lab uses. You get answers on site, with no wait for shipping. |
› |
03 / ONLINE Calisto never looks awayCalisto installs permanently on your most critical transformers and reads dissolved gases around the clock, catching developing faults early on the same DGA science as the lab and Myrkos. |
Close to Your Fleet
![]()
Five ISO/IEC 17025 accredited labs across North America.
Every location runs to the same ANAB-accredited methods, so where a sample is tested never changes the answer it gets. Doble is an ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 17034 certified company, and the Materials Laboratory has read insulating liquids since 1933.

PUT THE LAB TO WORK
One sample or a fleet-wide monitoring program, the accredited bench, the field, and online, all reading the same science. That is what turns oil and paper data into a decision you can act on before an asset fails.
