Career Day: Why be an Engineer?
Dover-Sherborn High School in Dover, MA recently hosted a Career Day where they invited over 50 local speakers representing various professional fields and occupations to share their experience with students.
I had the honor of presenting a discussion on what it takes to become an engineer, what they do, and why students might want to consider a career in this exciting field. Although my specialty is in power engineering, I represented engineering in the broadest sense.
Mario presents the case for choosing engineering as a career.
I shared with them how engineers shape our world in incredible ways, from the smartphones in our pockets to the bridges that connect our cities. “But what is an engineer?” I asked. Essentially engineers are problem solvers who use science, math and creativity to design, build, and maintain various systems, structures and technologies. Their work plays an integral role in driving innovation and improving the quality of life for people worldwide.
It was a very interactive and rewarding session with a group of bright, enquiring high school kids who are now considering what to do with their future.
